Every year around the end of October and the start of November in the Tres Reyes community of Lázaro Cárdenas, Quintana Roo. The greatest feast is celebrated between the earthly and spiritual world. The local community which is deeply rooted in the ancient Maya traditions prepares for the Hanal Pixán, or in English “the food for the souls”, a ceremony they have carried out for centuries.
ALLTOURNATIVE has decided to help this community and has the goal of preserving this incredible tradition and the legacy it has given to the Mexican culture.
Join us you to be part of this once in a lifetime event.
Brief History of the Hanal Pixán
The Hanal Pixán heritage and the Day of the Dead tradition throughout the rest of the country originates from the old pre-Hispanic cultures that believed there was life after death. The Mayas, like any great civilization of the early ages, also believed in the underworld, and therefore were much concerned about the future of their souls.
During the Hanal Pixán, it is believed that the souls travel through snake-shaped paths that connect the 9 underworlds below the Earth as well as the 13 heavens above it with the world of the living. Over the course of a week, these spirits have the opportunity to return to their loved ones who are still alive.
This explains why on October 31st, November 1st, and 2nd, they set up altars and go on with the ceremony to make sure their deceased find the light needed to guide them through their journey from the afterlife to their homes here on Earth.
What can you do with us during Hanal Pixán?
With the utmost intention of keeping the Maya traditions alive, ALLTOURNATIVE offers you the best approach to this enigmatic ancient practice. From a unique but respectful perspective of the local culture, you will be able to visit the altars of the local communities, where the people of Tres Reyes will explain the elements they put in each of their offerings and their symbols.
There is also a tour of the local cemetery, which is specially prepared for the event, and the journey is made through a suspension bridge of the community that connects with the cenote.
You will also witness a Maya ritual in the “Cenote de la Vida” performed by a shaman. Through this ritual, which is accompanied by dances and sounds to the rhythm of the drum, the “copal” is prepared, candles are placed and the path is decorated with flowers to welcome the souls that have traveled from beyond.
At the end, there is a traditional meal, which includes chachacuas (tamales), roasted pork, buñuelos, and atole. We also spend some time with the local people so together we can receive the souls that come to join us.
