In Mayan culture, the underworld was considered the third level of the Mayan universe after heaven and earth. A place where the supernatural reigned, where gods and deities lived, where good and evil coexisted, and also the place from where men came forth.

The Yucatan Peninsula has a limestone soil formed from the remains of highly erodible marine organisms. Which is why there are so many underground rivers and caves, most of them connected with natural entrances known as cenotes, natural sites of great mystical importance for the Mayan culture.

However, it is important to highlight that these environments are very fragile and therefore it is important to care for entire ecosystem in which they are located.
